It All Begins with Self

Everybody saw it. The smirking young boy in a maga hat facing off with a Native American man in Washington, D.C. The image went viral. The hashtags and stories proliferated. Commentaries sprouted and circulated. The kid even made it on the Today show.

What did we learn? That we’re merely hopeless spectators in the stands at a tennis match, but instead of watching the neon green ball lob back and forth, we jerk our heads toward the next manufactured reality, only to be distracted by the next one.

What we’re suffering from is a lack of authenticity. We value gossip over truth. Sensationalism over facts. Just look at who’s in the highest elected office in our nation: the world’s biggest faker.

We don’t necessarily need to rehash any of this. This is the new normal.

So how do we change any of it? As with anything we wish to improve, it all begins with self. Every one of us can start by being unapologetically ourselves with each other. This does not mean hiding away, pouring our (artificial) selves into our social media feeds. This does not mean changing our tone of voice when talking to one person or another. It does not mean dumbing down, playing up, or codeswitching. It means facing each other and having genuine conversations, hearing one another out, being proud of who we are, and not who we pretend to be.

Try this at your next social gathering. When you pay for your next cup of coffee. When you you’re with your co-workers, friends, and most importantly, your family. Connect with someone and get real. Break the barriers down and be vulnerable. Be a man and be honest with your fellow man. It might be the only way our humanity will survive.
